Last night at work I walked into a pane of glass and now I have a small gash on my forehead that opens it's mouth like Pac-Man every time I furrow my eyebrows....
....Which happens, on average, every 3.5 seconds. |

| Help ID'ing this flower? |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|07:19 pm] |
I took this pic while hiking near the Santa Ana River in Riverside, CA. This stuff was growing like crazy in the shady, moist spots. It was spread out alongside the trail, never more than 10" or so high, and didn't seem to mind that it was over 100F in the shade - I want to know what it is, because I need it in my garden! ;)
It doesn't look like I've got any good pics showing the leaves, but I'm hoping the flower is distinctive enough to narrow down the list of suspects.

Where are any cool character crossovers? Guys from Skies of Arcadia as Gallia militia? THIS IS VERY BASIC STUFF. :( |

| Researching to get my first Orchid |
[Jul. 16th, 2009|03:04 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | cheerful | ] | Hello. New member here. I moderate apartmentgarden and have recently taken a really keen interest in plants. I'm also a biology graduate student who studies mycorrhizae, so I guess it was only a matter of time before I took an interest in orchids. I don't want to just jump into them and run out and buy an orchid with out proper knowledge first, so I've been doing some reading and researching about what I should start with. I'm planning on starting out with a Phalaenopsis which is the recommended Orchid for beginners. I would eventually like to try to cultivate some domestic Calypso because I totally fell in love with Lady Slippers while traveling in BC. I wasn't sure if there were any variates that weren't wild, but I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on them if there are. I'm also in the market for a good and inexpensive book on Orchid care so I will have some good reference when I take home my first orchid. Finally, I'm planning on reading The Orchid Thief for my summer reading list. I heard it was a great book for someone who loves orchids.
Anyway I'm glad to find this community and I hope I can take part and share photos of my orchids. |

| Another mystery plant... this time not mine |
[Jul. 15th, 2009|10:07 pm] |
So, the last mystery plant turned out to be Clasping Twistedstalk (Streptopus amplexifolius). Happily, an edible... have to ride the bike out tomorrow to get more for tasting.
As I was at the Oregon State University Extension Service office here in Eugene, chatting with the ladies there who helped me double-check the ID of the prior mystery plant, they showed me one that someone had brought to them, hoping for identification. When they opened the plastic bag, containing the plant, I thought that someone had brought them a bag of marijuana, from the smell.... skunky/musky and nearly pot-like, but with some other scents involved. When smelled closer, the muskiness and similarity to marijuana lessened but the smell was still quite strong.
So here's some pics.. sorry for the quality, all that I had was my cell phone... I told 'em that I'd stop by tomorrow... I'll take my camera with me to see about some better pics.
EDIT: Well it turns out that this mystery plant is a subspecies of Hemizonia pungens. At least, the extension agent says so... they are "sending it in" for positive ID, but are pretty certain.
Thanks for all of the help!

So it's not really a photo I'm sharing, but an amazing collection of photos that extends into the animal realm as well as plant. It's called the Encyclopedia Of Life.
www.eol.org
I have seen some amazing photos in this community before, so I thought some of you might want to share them on this database. Or if not, then browse what others have contributed, help future identifications, etc. I thought it was just too cool and had to share! Have fun exploring out there all! |
